Here is everything you need to know to successfully paint your tile without any peeling! This tile paint by Rustoleum can be used on ceramic or porcelain tile, hardwood, vinyl, linoleum and laminate. It can also be used on tile backsplashes and tiled walls in bathrooms. Here is my video tutorial.
Prep:
The key to any good paint project is the proper prep! Here is what you will need to begin:
Rustoleum HOME Floor Coating Base and Top Coat (I used 2 qts of black base coat and 1 qt of matte top coat, and you can buy them here in a set)**
good painters tape
stencils (optional if you want a design!)
paint roller and extender
**the base coat comes 7 colors online but if you buy it directly from your local hardware store, you can get it tinted any color you want. The top coat is clear and comes in matte or semi-gloss
Next, you will need to prep your floors for paint.
Vacuum and mop your floors and then vacuum again! You don't want anything on the floor or else it will get painted in. There is a test described on the paint can for testing whether the paint will have good adhesion on your particular flooring.
This is from Rustoleum's website: "apply the paint to a clean, 3-inch-by-3-inch section of the floor and let it dry for 12 hours. Then use a utility knife to cut an “X” shape through the coating. Firmly press a piece of duct tape over the X and surrounding area, then quickly pull it off. If the floor paint remains on the tile, you’re ready to paint the rest of the floor. But if the tape pulls off more than 10 percent of the floor coating, you’ll need to sand the surface of the floor before coating it."
When I tried this on my floors, it did not remove any of the flooring!
Base Coat Application:
Tape all your baseboards off and use a brush to paint around the edges of your floor.
Roll on the base coat with a 3/8 nap roller (this is the standard nap). I highly recommend using a roller extension to save your back. Make sure to get paint in all the grout lines with your roller!
After the first coat, you need to wait 6 hours before a second coat of the base paint. The base coat is very tacky, so make sure you don't walk barefoot on it or you will leave marks. I find that the best thing to wear is a clear pair of socks that match the paint color.
I highly recommend doing two base coats at a minimum. If it is a high-traffic area, you could even do 3 coats.
If you want to do a stencil design on your tile, now is the time to do it before you apply the top coat! If you need to tape off anything for your design, make sure to use delicate painter's tape.
** please note whether you are buying a gallon or a quart if ordering online. I used two quarts of base coat and one quart of top coat for my kitchen floor.
Top Coat Application
The top coat can be applied as soon as the base coat is dry to the touch, around 1-2 hours.
The top coat is a very thin, milky paint and needs to be applied with a 1/4 nap roller. Make sure to keep a wet edge as you are applying because once it dries, it is hard to tell where it has been applied. This is important because if you do two coats, it becomes opaque.
Your floor is walkable after 24 hours (to be honest, once it dried after a couple hours, I walked on it and it was fine!), and fully cured after 7 days. I gently placed my furniture back after about 4 days.
FAQ:
Can you use it if you have dogs?
Yes! I have a dog and her claws do not scratch the tile
Will this work in bathrooms?
Yes but not in bathtubs or showers. For those, use tub and tile paint.
Can you still mop your floors?
Yes!
What type of flooring does this work on?
Ceramic and porcelain tile, wood, laminate, concrete, vinyl and linoleum floors.
Would you try this? Let me know!
